You Should Be Embarassed to Work at Brad Benson

Brad BensonWell, the car shopping experience for my girlfriend Beth finally came to a conclusion. I’m sure you read my recent blog about car shopping. If not, then shame on you and hit the hyperlink.

After weeks of deciding, she chose the 2013 Hyundai Elantra in red. We went to Brad Benson Hyundai in South Brunswick NJ since Beth wanted to get her car that day and they had the best selection to choose from. A bad first impression came for us when she said she had an appointment, but they didn’t have her name on file. Nice internal communication guys, not like you want to sell cars or anything.

But I digress. We got a guy named Frank Simonetti (spelling might be wrong and maybe the first name is wrong, too), who had only been working at Brad Benson Hyundai for 4 days when we went in and left his previous dealership because he didn’t like the managing style the team had to offer. Oh how unfortunate the next set of events would be.

After waiting for 2 hours during the entire sales process (test drive, negotiating, etc) and Beth decided to get that car, a person who I think was sales manager Steve Y. called a sales team on the sales floor. With customers present.

What was said in this meeting? We only sold 40 cars today. You should be ashamed of yourselves. Even if you sold a car today, you should be embarrassed.

Customers who bought cars were still sitting in the dealership and heard every word of this meeting. Not only are you belittling your employees and probably not motivating them very much, but you make your customers feel like they don’t matter because they’re only one of 40 people buying a car (and it took another 2 hours to complete the entire sales process, making it seem like you were taking time out of the customer’s day). I don’t feel like this is an effective management style.

Hell, even Rocco Cara who was the financial advisor helping Beth out, said that he hates when management calls sales meetings while customers are still in the showroom. I didn’t get an opinion from Ed Gilbert, the Delivery Coordinator that showed us first-class customer service by showing us how everything in the 2013 Hyundai Elantra worked. I still got a good share of business cards and Beth got a good car, so everybody wins.

Except for poor Frank (or whatever his name is) who is probably regretting his decision to start working at Brad Benson Hyundai. Womp womp.

Like a Kid in a Candy Store

I went to Staples with Beth and I felt like a kid in a candy store. Well, a kid in an office supply store that happens to sell candy at the cash register in the “impulse buy” section along with noise-making key chains and wacky Post-It Notes.

I’ve been to enough Staples stores to know the drill about finding the most business cards. Step one was straight to the Copy & Print center, which yielded some good booty:

I snagged seven business cards in a matter of 15 seconds. One associate asks “can I help you?” Nope, I’m good. Finally found my girlfriend and as we walked to the register, we passed the mobile section.

Looks like I grabbed a couple of more. Of course, being a weekend, there’s a line. Out of the corner of my eye, I see the Easy Tech section, as well as…

Another three cards, including the last one of an employee who was not listed as someone who works there anymore. That’s a real score in my book. I’m thrilled to add 12 more unique business cards to my collection.

I didn’t buy any candy though, so it wasn’t a total win.

Car Shopping Confusion

Sansone Auto NetworkI’ve had a couple of experiences shopping for a car, two used ones that wound up dying in a year and a half of ownership and one new one that I was forced to get after the second car had crapped out while crossing the Tappan Zee Bridge.

But, I digress. Beth and I are starting the car shopping process since her 2002 Kia Rio is pretty much the equivalent of one of those cars attached to the front of a shopping cart.

Since there were so many models that she wanted to test out, we decided to go to Sansone Auto Network because they had a few brands she liked. And the Toyota Prius c that I wanted to test out.

One of the cars Beth liked was the Hyundai Elantra GT. So, we went to Sansone to test drive one and of course, I scoured for business cards.

I grabbed a bunch from the dealership and noticed something strange: they were all different. Quite different, as you can see from the photo. Where’s the consistent marketing message?

It looks like the sales force has to print up their own business cards. Is this the norm for car dealers? Or is this to “show off their individual personalities”? Who knows, but I just see it as 4 more cards for the collection.

Cha-ching.

Long Time, No Blog

I haven’t blogged in a while. Ever since Thanksgiving and Christmas have been looming (and passing), Ive found it hard to find the time and inspiration to write for myself. Let me briefly run down some of the things that have happened in my life in the past two months, through business cards.

Bertuccis Woodbridge NJ

One day between Thanksgiving and Christmas, I decided (well, my girlfriend decided) that we should go to Bertucci’s in Woodbridge NJ. We had a good meal, but when it came time for it to be served, my girlfriend receive the wrong pasta. The result? The waiter took it off of the bill. I was very surprised at this since Bertucci’s is a chain restaurant and chains are not very open about giving away theirĀ  product. Bertucci’s is a higher-end chain restaurant and the food was pretty good (I had a salad topped with a piece of salmon).

Wire Name Mike

When Christmas shopping, I stumbled across (well, my girlfriend linked me to) a guy on Etsy who creates customized jewelry made with wires. Wire Name Mike made it simple for me to customize a ring that says the name Beth. It’s a great gift idea if you’re looking for something personal to give someone you care about for not a lot of money. She enjoyed it when I gave it to her on Christmas day.

Proactiv

On Christmas Eve, I arrived at my destination (my sister’s house) much earlier than anticipated, so I decided to head to the local mall and walk around. I ran into a kiosk that my local mall doesn’t have anymore that sells Proactiv body wash. This is something that’s helped me with my slight body acne for a while now and normally, you can only get the body wash if you buy the face product first. I don’t need it, so I didn’t want to waste my money. I stocked up and should be good for the next year or so.

Corso 98Last weekend, me and my girlfriend went out on a double date to a nice restaurant called Corso 98 with one of her friends and her husband. This restaurant is on the fancier side and the plates were all presented beautifully.

This BYOB restaurant had a nice atmosphere, where it’s easy to have good conversation and even better food. I had fried mozzarella and a grilled fig salad with goat cheese and strawberries to start. I moved onto the main course of pan-seared sesame-encrusted tuna (medium rare) with seasonal spaghetti vegetables, wasabi and white peach teriyaki (which I mixed together). It was a nice, light meal that filled me up at the same time.

Perhaps, it was the fresh bread that was brought out before the meal. They had both butter and a garlic hummus to put on the bread. Once the food was digested, I have a chocolate chip creme brulee for dessert. It was nicely made and light as well.

I enjoyed the meal overall and is a nice place to go on a special occasion.

Hopefully, I can write more often during 2013. I’ve been pretty busy over the past month or two and I’m looking to dedicate more time to my personal blog.
