Unemployment Weeks 5-7: Unemployed No More

That’s a wrap folks. The last time I was unemployed, it was for 2 years. This time, it was only for 2 months. I didn’t blog much more about my unemployment since I felt like it was depressing.

The job recruiters became more of a waste of time between wasted trips into Manhattan dripping in sweat and no job results coming from them. In fact, I’m making a vow that I’m never using job recruiters again and recommending that nobody asking advice about being unemployed to never use them either.

The Rest of the Interview Process

After the interviews I mentioned and the useless job recruiter meetings I went to, I had other interviews including:

  • Johnson & Johnson: The only job recruiter that came through got me an opportunity to interview as Communications Specialist I (better than II or III I suppose). The woman was really nice and I was excited since this was for a recycling initiative J&J has. It was a temp-to-perm position that didn’t pan out.
  • Gaspari Nutrition: This one was hell since my GPS took me to the wrong place entirely. Add in the fact that there was construction & I had to call Donna (the woman I was meeting with), I wound up being almost an hour late to the interview. We met about the social media-heavy position and I even met Rich Gaspari, a famous bodybuilder.
  • Johnny on the Spot: This was a phone interview for a Marketing Coordinator position that I felt went well and I had good chemistry with Marvin. Of course, I never heard from him again (as most employers do).
  • Proskauer: This was a Website Coordinator position that I felt good about. I met with 3 of their employees and got really excited about the position. I wanted to take on that challenge, but it wasn’t in the cards.
  • Imperial Bag & Paper Co. LLC: The woman reached out to me to interview me, I reached out back to her a few times to schedule & never heard from her again.
  • Wyndham Worldwide: The hotel chain was looking for a Search Engine Optimization Strategist and upon meeting with Rich, he wanted someone with more of a technical SEO background that I don’t have.
  • Manning Advertising: This was the most in-depth interview I had. Or should I say interviews. Meeting with Thomas Van Sciver and talking with him about automotive SEO was a great conversation and I felt like we really hit it off. The proof is there, as I am now the newest member of their team.

After I got the call, I had to tell companies including the ASPCA, Inflexion Interactive and GameChanger.

Why Going to Unemployment is Useless the 2nd Time Around

It’s true: I learned absolutely nothing from going down to unemployment. It was honestly the biggest waste of my mornings. Here’s why:

  • Changing Employment Landscape/Job Search Skills: This pretty much told you where to look for jobs online. This would be helpful for older people who have never job searched using the Internet, but I have plenty of experience doing that.
  • Résumé: They highlighted putting together a résumé and the key points of it. Same thing as above.
  • Interviewing: This one reminded me of high school because of the ridiculous video they showed of an exaggerated guy who did everything wrong. The highlight was us interviewing each other and the only guy who said he wouldn’t hire his partner was the sketchiest looking one in there.
  • Networking/Skills-Based Volunteering: This pretty much told you the dos and don’ts of networking, which is a little helpful, and gave some ways to use your skills as a volunteer while being unemployed. My skills don’t do much in the latter, so nope.

Ding dong, the witch is dead.

Unemployment Week 4: Four Interviews and a Funeral

Week 4 of my unemployment was jam packed, in spite of it being a holiday weekend. Let’s dive right into it.

The Phone Interviews

On Monday, I had two phone interviews. The first one was with Advanced Systems Concepts, where I spoke with Marie Rosenberg from their human resources department regarding a Digital Marketing Specialist role. They’re a software company that offers work automation products. After interviewing with them, I didn’t feel that comfortable with the material.

The second one was with DigitasLBi, a client of Infinity Consulting Solutions who I previously blogged about. They’re a technology & marketing agency, which sounded more my speed. I interviewed with them over the phone and was even offered an in-person interview.  However, I was told on the day before the interview that they filled the role. That was pretty disappointing, especially since I didn’t get to meet with them.

Creative CircleThe In-Person Interviews

I also had two in-person interviews on Wednesday, which were very different. The first one with Creative Circle, a job recruiter. I have my thoughts about job recruiters, which I’ve expressed in a previous blog post.

I met with Danny Luna and he’s definitely one of the good ones. Unemployed BlogWe talked for about an hour about my talents and what type of roles would be ideal for me. Although the in-person application process was long, it was thorough and relevant to the job.

I even received a handbook from them, so it seemed like they were that much more prepared than the other recruiters I saw.

The second interview I had was at the unemployment office. It was interesting since it was a meeting with about 15 people and a guy who did a presentation. He basically said it was all common sense stuff.

Another interesting factoid that I got is that I was lumped in with the “advanced” group, or the ones who they thought would get reemployed before our benefits lapsed.

I met with someone one-on-one, who seemed to not care at all. I just talked and he just “uhhuhed” me. Government bureaucracy at work.

I also learned that I have four scheduled meetings at the unemployment office for trainings on:

  • Changing Employment Landscape/Job Search Skills
  • Résumé
  • Interviewing
  • Networking/Skills-Based Volunteering

NJSFDAThe Funeral

My last in-person interview was with the New Jersey State Funeral Directors Association (NJSFDA). They’re a resource for people to plan funerals and act as an alliance for funeral directors in NJ. I spoke with Lorraine Walker and Jacqueline Healey regarding a Digital Editor role.

It was an intriguing hour of talking about everything associated with funerals, as well as about them building their digital marketing strategy from scratch using their monthly print magazine as a source of their content.

I felt like everything meshed well in the interview. I’m waiting to hear back, so we’ll see what comes of it. It would be for a second interview.

Unemployment Week 3: The Good, Bad and Ugly of Online Job Recruiters

During my brief time being unemployed, I’ve opened up the doors to have recruiters contact me. Additionally, I’ve also applied to job postings with recruiters on them. With that being said, I present to you the good and bad of job recruiters.

The Good

Vitamin TalentThe good job recruiters out there include ones who provide a job that actually exists and lets me know my chances of getting it based on getting to know me. One case is Jessica Lester of Vitamin Talent, a division of Aquent.

We met for an hour, talking about my skills and what I’m looking for. We are still in contact since she submitted my résumé for a Digital Marketing and Ad Coordinator position one of her clients is seeking.

Infinity Consulting SolutionsAnother good example of a recruiter is Mike Ziegelbaum at Infinity Consulting Solutions. Similarly, we also talked for about an hour and got to know what I was looking for.

I’m currently in talks with one of their clients who is looking for an SEO Analyst. I will save these client names for a future post if anything goes further with them.

I wish my experience with others were as good as with these two companies and individuals.

The Bad

JumpStartThere are other recruiters that aren’t as good. Let’s take JumpStart for example. I spoke with Amy Lackie on the phone briefly since she wanted to meet me face to face to get to know me, which was fine.

However, after meeting face to face, it felt as though it could have just as easily been done over the phone. I spent about 5 minutes with Amy with her telling me that I was overqualified for the first job she had and that I had to speak with Dan Meara (a fellow Marist alum from the same year as me no less) since the client was one of his.

I waited in the lobby for about 5 minutes for Dan, spoke to him about the job description for about 2 minutes and he said he would email me the description. Umm… I’m in the office, can’t you show it to me? The most fun part is that I’m still waiting on that job description even after following up.

That’s not the worst of it though.

The Ugly

The ugly of job recruiters are the ones who find your résumé on Monster or Career Builder. Granted, it’s always good to have all of your fields open, but you literally have a 1 in 20 shot of getting any opportunity from it. That’s especially true when you get contacted by 4 of them for the same position (and because of rights to represent, you can only get sent by one company). They’re all temporary gigs with big-name companies.

That isn’t the problem. The problem is when they leave you a voicemail and call you three times within an hour since the opening is so “urgent”. I am at the point of screening calls from numbers that I don’t know because of these recruiters.

The worst one in particular is Artech Information Systems, specifically Mahak Gupta. I want to point this person out by name because we talked about the position and applying me for it. She then called me back the next day saying that she wanted to alter my résumé to be more presentable. I was asked by this woman if she can change my job title. You can’t change a job title you had!

If that’s not absurd enough, she also wanted to add in that I did tasks that I didn’t do to make myself more presentable. I said no to both. She “revamped” my résumé to lump my experience together by town and not by company. She merely combined sections of my résumé. The actions of Mahak Gupta have inspired me to never want to work with Artech Information Systems again.

Unemployment Week 2: In-Person Interviews

It’s another week of unemployment for me. In my first unemployment blog post, I spoke about updating my résumé and filing for unemployment. Because of my work ethic, I already had gotten calls from a couple of places where I applied.

NetCom LearningThe first one was NetCom Learning, where I met with General Manager Yang. The emails were signed by Yang, so I thought that her business card would have her last name. Nope. It’s Yang, just Yang. I know that from looking at the NetCom Learning website that her name is Yang Tuan, although the site has her listed as the Chief Marketing Officer.

It turns out that they were looking for someone who had a lot of paid search experience. I understand the claim and it’s just my experience not fitting the bill.

The next interview was also in Manhattan, but was done through recruiter Christie Besinger for a position at Dentsu Aegis. I was really excited about this position when applying since they were hiring a whole team of people for their new Microsoft account.

It was a different interview to say the least. I went in and interviewed at the same time as another woman around my age did. It was a weird setup since half of the office was empty (awaiting the hiring of this new team). I wound up waiting in an empty office for literally 25 minutes before speaking with Amanda who will be working with Microsoft and Gina from human resources. Neither had a card and it turned out they wanted someone with display advertising experience.

Well, it’s good that I’m getting my name and face out there. I have more opportunities coming up, so see you in Week 3!

Unemployment Week 1: Resume Update & Filing For Unemployment

In 2009, I got laid off from my job at Advantage Business Media due to the economy. In 2014, it’s happened to me again. I’m officially unemployed. Again.

The first step of moving forward once again (aside from getting comfortable in my pajamas) was to update my résumé. I did just that, put that information on LinkedIn and uploaded new résumés to the job boards I’m on.

Jobs 4 JerseySpeaking of job boards, I had to sign up for Jobs4Jersey when filing for unemployment. What a hassle it was. Uploading my résumé to this site was such a pain. When putting in my job title, it asked to select a generic title. None of them truly fit what I did, of course. I guess I’m a round peg in a square hole. Once I figured it out, it seemed that you can put in your own description, so I just did that.

It took 2 years after the first layoff, so let’s take the ride that hopefully won’t last as long! I’ll be blogging about my experiences as an unemployed person, so stay tuned!

Oh, and I was on hold for an hour and half while filing for unemployment and the call got dropped suddenly. What an auspicious start to this process.
