Quite the Intriguing Business Card

Patsy WrightOne thing that you should know about me is that I’m not religious. Another thing is that I don’t like organized religion in general.

But, I was quite intrigued when I came across this business card at a grocery store by me. That’s because it’s a very oddly specific thing that Patsy Wright does. How many people in the area are deaf? How many of them know ASL? How many of them are Christian?

I don’t think it’s relevant, as Wright is doing this for free. Maybe she feels that people needing a little spiritual guidance from the Bible can learn more, although they can read it. I’m assuming they need an outlet to answer questions that they have.

It’s a good thing that this person is doing out of the kindness of her heart. Religion isn’t something that has me curious to learn more, as it’s not really my thing, but it’s good that people who were born or got this detriment are able to have this option available. The very few people who are deaf, know ASL and are Christian.

I guess it should be called a volunteer card. It still goes in the business card collection though.

P.S. Does that email address (the one way of contacting this woman) have a typo in it? If it does, then that’s just cruel.

Mike Isabella Restaurant Out of Business Already

I drove by G Grab and Go, a Mike Isabella restaurant that I’ve previously blogged about, the other day and saw that it was no longer there. This really intrigued me since it opened up less than a year ago and it’s already gone.

What happened? Where did this restaurant go wrong?

Mike Isabella RestaurantMike Isabella

Firstly, it was in a spot that is notorious for high turnover of businesses. Before it was G Grab and Go, it was some other deli that didn’t last for a while either. Next, it’s going to be a felafel place that I will try since I like felafels. I hope it lasts a bit longer.

Secondly, this area was clearly the wrong area for Mike Isabella to set up shop. One Yelp reviewer said “I really want to like this place because its close to my house but their concept doesn’t work and won’t work in this area.” I agree since it’s a densely Indian population and I don’t feel as though many of them would eat there.

Thirdly, the food got pretty mixed reviews. The same reviewer as above said, “I ordered their roast beef sandwich and it was edible but not great at all. Also ordered the Italian sandwich and the thick cut meat was so hard to chew. They need to add more to the menu and cut the meat thinner.”

Another reviewer talked about what I got the one time I went and said, “I ordered the Chorizo Burrito and while it was edible, the burrito was way too oily and greasy. In terms of taste, it wasn’t anything special and definitely not worth the price.” I definitely thought the burrito was greasy and oily, but I was craving something with that flavor profile that day. The burrito fell apart as I picked it up.

This Mike Isabella restaurant could have definitely worked somewhere else, but he picked the wrong building in the wrong area. And perhaps, he should have gotten some locals to taste test the food prior to opening to see what could be improved.

Did you eat at G Grab and Go? How was your experience? Let me know in the comment sections below or on Twitter.

Should These Be at a Gym?

I recently joined LA Fitness after my former gym, Planet Fitness, charged my girlfriend 37 times for one month of payment. I didn’t want to take chances. Aside from more advanced equipment, there was also a table of business cards I stumbled upon the first day I worked out there. I previously wrote a blog about whether I would use a product or service based on a paid-for business card display, but now I’m asking if you would go to a place, use a product or buy a service if it was advertising at the gym.

First up is Sir SpeedySir Speedy. It’s a company that does printing & marketing, so it seems like an odd fit. However, I know that LA Fitness has personal trainers and they might promote their services outside of the gym to get new people to join.

That and who knows what kind of marketing needs the gym members will have. It’s right around the corner from the gym also, so the location is great for people (like me) who might not know about it.

Nelson ConcepcionSecond is Nelson Concepcion, who is an Independent Brand Partner for Nerium. This is some sort of age-defying treatment cream, but it seems like a pyramid scheme to me. Does it work? I have no idea since I have the face of an 18 year old. Too bad my hair’s graying already.

But I digress. I think that this is an appropriate card for a gym because people go to the gym to stay in shape and to feel younger. I suppose some of those people want to look younger, too.

Corner BoutiqueThird up is The Corner Boutique. This one is a bit more tricky because it doesn’t seem right on the surface. However, I saw “body shapers” on the card and I guess some women who have a few extra pounds would want to use them to hide their unsightly cellulite.

That and the fact that people looking for clothing do work out make it fit, but it’s a pretty far leap. I guess to each his own then.

Seema JagtianiSpeaking of leaps, this next card is also a pretty big one. Seema Jagtiani, a Farmer’s Insurance agent, had her card there at the off chance that someone needing insurance will pick it up.

I know the area I live in (and where my gym is) is heavily Indian and she is Indian, so perhaps that’s more about the demographic. This is accurate since there are several Indian people at the gym. I know this may seem racist, but it seems the Indian people in my area flock to one another.

La Rosa PizzeriaThen, there’s La Rosa Pizzeria. I work out and I eat pizza, but I wish I could quit it because pizza is not the best food for you.

And I like to eat a lot, if you couldn’t tell by the business cards I cover in my blog.

Even though it’s delicious and one of my favorite foods, pizza is not the ideal workout food. Neither is pasta or pretty much everything Italian.

Shaun ParkerThis comes to the last card at the table of cards. This one was from Shaun Parker who distributes health products. She (I didn’t think that pronoun fit until I went to the site) is a part of what also seems like a pyramid scheme of sorts with the Ultimate Body Applicator.

At least it’s fitness/health related.

I also found a bunch of business cards on the ground outside of the gym and inside the locker room, so I guess this was the right gym for me.

Two Out of Three Isn’t Bad

Dom's SubsI just started a new job in Tinton Falls NJ and decided to grab a bite out to eat for lunch.

Translation: I did not have lunch and needed to be fed.

Luckily, one of my new coworkers was going out also and since I’m flexible about food options, we went to Dom’s Subs. As you can see from the card, it’s a deli-type place with a little more variety.

On this day, I chose to have the Super Italian sub with all of the fun smoked meats that you would find (salami, pepperoni, prosciutto, capicola) along with provolone cheese and ham. It was one of the better Italian subs that I’ve had, so it definitely fit the bill.

It was also cold outside on this day, so I decided to have soup. Bad move.

I had New England clam chowder (which was so cold that I had to heat it up in the microwave) that might as well have been just chowder since I think I could count the clam pieces on one hand. And the large was served to me in a beverage container.

Advice: avoid the soup, but do get a sandwich.

There was also a bulletin board full of business cards that I only got halfway through before we had to leave and go back to the office. I will definitely be back at some point to snag the rest of the business cards and enjoy a quality sandwich.

Drop Something? I’ll Pick That Up

Sidelle SydneyMany times, people drop things on the ground and think nothing of it. Sometimes, they pick it up right away if it’s something like money. Other times, it’s something like food that you would want to pick it up but know you can’t.

But there are things that I do pick up: dropped business cards. Yes, it’s a sickness. It all started when I was walking along the highway as a teen and saw a business card just dropped on the grass in the median.

Business CardThat’s just the beginning of my obsession collecting business cards… that were left on the ground. I’ve seen many business cards on the ground in urban areas, such as Brooklyn where I recently found the card of Sidelle Sydney.

I know what battle raps are (thanks 8 Mile) and are not really my scene. I did go to this site and it seemed like an interesting point of view. It’s just not my scene, yo. Yes, I’m white.

Carmen OrtegaMoving onto another business card that I found in Union City NJ, where there’s clearly a high Hispanic population. How can I tell? Just take a look at this business card from the language, even down to Carmen Ortega’s name.

All I can get from this is that she distributes something. Probably a pyramid scheme of some sort. No habla espanol, making me 0 for 2 when it comes to picking up relevant business cards off of the ground.

Sandip PatelI’m not prejudice when it comes to picking up business cards off of the ground. I can do it in a more suburban setting.

And what setting is more representative of suburbia than right outside of my apartment complex. One of my neighbors decided to drop the business card of Sandip Patel, who is apparently running for Edison Council.

Business CardsWhat’s his platform? What are his views? And why is there another guy on the back of his business card? I have no idea, but I know to vote Column C this Election Day.

Wrong holiday. And I don’t vote, so that’s 0 for 3.

None of these are of any use to me, but I’ll still add them to my collection.

Thank You and Goodbye PCG

PCG Digital MarketingWhether you know it or not, I’ve decided to leave PCG Digital Marketing. I’ve been employed by PCG since March 0f 2011 when I joined the team as a Content Writer and got promoted up to Project Manager in April 2013.

Now that a lot of my work is done and I explained my clients to people at work, it feels sort of surreal. The last time I left a full-time job was in 2009 when I got laid off along with a quarter of my company.

We had a happy hour at the Houlihan’s by my job today in my honor and it showed me the reason why I enjoyed working at PCG: the people. They made some of the good moments even better and some of the bad moments more bearable.

I’ve enjoyed talking with and working with various team members throughout the years, whether they’re still working at the company or decided to move on and pursue other endeavors like I have. I have a lot of fond memories of work, whether it’s through the relationships I’ve had or some of the achievements I’ve done professionally.

I’m not mentioning any specific names because I don’t want to make anyone feel left out, but there are so many people that helped me along the way to learn more about writing content, managing projects and SEO in general. I thank them all since they helped me become the professional I am today.

I’ve learned from mistakes I’ve made and have become a better person for it. PCG has made me a better person and I thank everyone there for it.

Goodbye, PCG.

Great Choice, No Misteak About It

Char SteakhouseLast weekend, I went to a birthday dinner with Beth’s family to Char Steakhouse in Raritan. This is a high-end restaurant (also with a location in Red Bank) that is all about the steak and the right wines and beers to complement said steaks.

And I am not a fan of steaks.

In fact, the only time I eat steak is if I’m at a wedding, Beth wants to get the chicken and steak is the only other option that will fill me up. But I digress.

I saw enough menu items on here that I would have a good meal. I started off with a cocktail and some escargot, which grossed the entire table out besides me. I first had escargot in Paris and enjoyed it, so I ordered it and was not disappointed.

Char Steakhouse Raritan NJThen, for dinner, I ate the roasted chicken that was called “Griggstown Organic” because it came from a local market in Princeton. On the side, we all shared grilled asparagus, creamed spinach, mac n’ cheese (that I did not eat) and potato gratin. All of it was delicious, especially since the chicken came with a side of roasted garlic that looked like a whole bulb of it. It was awesome.

Anybody who knows me knows that I’m a garlic fiend.

And to cap it all off, two desserts were shared: apple cobbler and brownie, both ala mode. Desserts are desserts, so of course they tasted good. The only flaws about all of this quality food were having to wait about 10 minutes for a table even with a reservation and the high bill.

But I didn’t pay for any of it, so this may have been the best free meal I’ve had in a while.

Hitting the Motherload (A While Ago)

Business CardsI mentioned in a previous blog post that some of my friends and family actually collect business cards for me from their adventures. I’ve procrastinated writing this for a couple of months just because other business cards I’ve collected have taken precedent.

Anyway, I got a mother load of business cards from my Uncle Skip and Aunt Ellen a couple of months ago when I last saw them. I don’t see them often, but they usually bring me a heaping pile of business cards when I do.

My uncle recently retired, as did my aunt, so they have been taking some pretty nifty vacations. What does that mean? I get business cards from some pretty interesting places that I would never see otherwise.

Business CardsBut that’s not the only thing that I get. I also get to know their habits through the amount of times I see certain business cards, such as a a bunch of business cards from a Staples… sound familiar?

For example, these eight business cards are places that I’ve seen for years. I know I’ve seen some of them at least 10 times. Hell, there are multiple copies of each of these.

I see this from other people I get cards from also. Is it sad that I know the eating habits of people I don’t see often?

Probably.

Business CardsMy uncle also likes to humor me when giving me a bunch of business cards.

He throws in some non-business cards just to be funny keep me entertained while sorting through them. Whether it’s an expired credit card, a coupon or even those old-style phone cards (who uses those anymore?), I can always expect some surprises when sorting through the cards I get from them.

I appreciate all of the business cards I get from them, whether they’re from Long Island, Queens, Manhattan, Wildwood, Massachusetts, Hawaii, St. Maarten, St. Martin (yes, they’re different places) or even Australia.

That’s Quite the Fancy Title

Barbera TerranovaI apologize for not writing in a little while. Life’s been a little busy lately and I’ve been working hard. Speaking of working hard, I’ve recently come across a business card of Barbara Terranova, who is known as The Mattress Queen. That’s quite the claim and fancy title.

But that’s not why I’m writing the blog. (I didn’t realize it until I started writing the blog that she was the Mattress Queen).

It’s because of her other non-royal title of Comfort Consultant. It’s no Prime Minister, but it’s still a pretty fancy title nonetheless. It could have been salesperson or mattress expert, but comfort consultant seems to be the best way to describe someone who can help you pick the right mattress.

And it’s not as arrogant as declaring yourself the Mattress Queen.

Jonathan PellecchiaBut I digress. What’s truly fascinating is that this is not the only Comfort Consultant business card that I’ve gotten recently. One of the business cards I got recently from my college friends at the last wedding I went to (and wrote about) was for a different type of Comfort Consultant.

Again, this is a fancy way of saying you work as someone who installs heating and air conditioning. I really wouldn’t be more compelled to buy a mattress or HVAC service from someone with a fancy title. I would want someone who can do the job right.

What do you think of fancy titles like this one?

Don’t Pack Your Knives and Go

G Grab and GoEver since I saw the “Coming Soon” sign up in front of what used to be the Tuscany Cafe, I anticipated the G Grab and Go restaurant. Why is that?

Simple. It’s because it’s owned by Mike Isabella, who I watched on the only Bravo show that I would admit to watching: Top Chef. He went from being positioned as an antagonist on Season 6 in Las Vegas to being positioned as more of a fan favorite in Season 8 in New York.

Mike IsabellaKnowing that a man who was almost Top Chef was opening up a restaurant right around the corner from my apartment excited me. And then it happened: the place opened.

And I procrastinated going there. Until a few days ago. When thinking about what to get for lunch before a road trip to CT, my girlfriend Beth and I decided on G Grab and Go since we wanted to try the Mike Isabella-inspired restaurant. Being a premier chef, the food was delicious.

Top ChefI had a chorizo breakfast burrito with egg white, hash brown, cheddar cheese and a green chili sauce and she had a sandwich called Let’s Go Clubbing (turkey, bacon, lettuce, tomato, avocado and basil mayo on sourdough bread).

In addition to the food, the restaurant also had the Top Chef look that I’ve seen pulled off during Restaurant Wars (the most highly anticipated contest by the chefs). It has seating for 14 people, so it’s definitely good if you want to Snag and Stay. See what I did there.

I also saw a section dedicated to Mike Isabella’s book, as well as some co-promotion by another Top Chef alum: Carla Hall. Do you want to taste Carla Hall’s nuts? You can at G Grab and Go.

The only disappointing factor about this trip was the fact that I got my food in a brown paper bag. Normally, I wouldn’t be so angry for getting brown bagged, but there were a couple of fancy G Grab and Go boxes prominently on display. Taunting me.

I would definitely go back here again.
